Cambridge Corn Exchange
We were engaged to help upgrade the existing fire alarm system at The Cambridge Corn Exchange music venue, to bring it into line with the current recommendations of BS5839:1-2017 to category L2.
The scope of the project was to utilise hybrid technologies to help limit the amount of time and disruption to the venue as there was a tight deadline for completion.
As The Cambridge Corn Exchange is a venue that stages events which use smoke/haze machines, we had to use our expertise to reduce false alarms by design. This was achieved firstly by installing a key switch that automatically disables high-risk AFD devices during performances. The old system was operated by simply enabling a delay period which was rarely turned off.
We also installed a second key switch that gave further control by enabling an investigation period, which was initiated by staff via the use of a pager system. The aim was to allow Corn Exchange staff a period of time to investigate an activation before a full evacuation was required and thereby ensure that no unnecessary evacuations that could be costly to the venue were carried out.
The installation was completed within the tight time restraints that were agreed by working around the venue’s busy event schedule and causing minimal disruption to all concerned.
