Keeping Turners in the picture

Turners of Soham are one of the UK’s largest and most successful privately owned transport companies now operating in excess of 1,850 vehicles from 32 sites, and employing over 3,400 people.

We were therefore pleased to be commissioned by engineering consultancy FJB to work on a project for Turners recently. We attended site to assess the project which consisted of installing five new cameras in the large Lorry Park of their Soham headquarters. We reviewed the existing installations which were connected to data cabs linked by fibre optics due the long cable runs. They also required an existing camera to be moved to a new location, which made a total of six cameras to be installed.

We created two data cabs, which are both fully waterproof IP65 rated. Both cabs also have an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) to suppress mains spikes and power outages, and we ran a fibre optic cable from the existing network and linked the new cabs to allow network switching. We cabled with a soft dig from the cabs out into the existing ducts and then into various lamp posts. We installed the cameras at around 12 metres, and inserted a surge protector at a lower level in the posts themselves to protect the installation from unforeseen events such as lightning strikes. We took Optical Time Domain Readings (OTDRs) for record and to ensure the fibre network was correctly set up. We then commissioned them and loaded them to the 300 plus existing cameras on the Turners network.

For Stuart Drummond, owner of ATL Alarms, this was a dream project. ‘We thoroughly enjoyed working with FJB and Turners on what was a more complex and challenging project,’ comments Stuart. ‘We're very experienced with fibre and larger networks, so it was great to be able to plan, design and install high-quality cameras at such a large site. We used Mobotics cameras which offer premium functionality and image quality, and now that we’re on Turners’ approved suppliers list we’re looking forward to being invited to carry out additional projects in the future.’
